Mamie Walters said… John, I was at Skowhegan in '70. I received the scholarship from Univ. of Texas at Austin. It was a special time and I can also say that it changed my life. I refer to that time a bit more on my website (mamiewaltersart.com). I was a young and very serious color-field painter at the time and won the scholorship based upon that work. However, I left Skowhegan with my focus totally on contemporary realism. I have had several years of not painting at all, focused on earning a living. I have had many, many years of painting on weekends and holidays (incredibly frustrating). I now paint full time, hooray! Thanks for the kind words about my work. The still life are painted in the studio. The street scenes are from photos taken in San Francisco. Light and values are always a focus in my work. However, in the street scenes (or those particular scenes), the psychological space between the subjects is a strong factor and more subjective (and projective) than assessing light, values, color, etc. I plan to continue to explore this both in street scenes and still life.
