FYI: La Pensione Hotel

I have changed my reservation from the Pacific Inn to La Pensione Hotel.  It is located in the area known as Little Italy.  There are lots of restaurants and a Dick Blick Art Supply store within a block or two.  Also, this puts me closer to Balboa Park and is a short taxi ride there. The total cost (including tax) is $397.76 for four nights.    Mamie WaltersSee More

My reservation at the Pacific Inn

Hello all,  I did some checking into the options for logging at the workshop.  I was particularly interested in the Balboa Inn (it is very close) and Park Manor (also close and I like it's nostalgic look).  However, I settled upon the Pacific Inn.  They provided me the best rate of $333. (this includes tax) for four nights. The price also includes breakfast. It is a regular looking motel sort of place and is a few blocks further than some.  However, it is a good area and near resturants (so…See More

Hi Mamie! Thank you so much for your message and your very kind words. I just visited your website, and was completely blown away by the quality of your work. Your urban and rural landscapes and still lifes are my favorites, and "Blackie's Apple." I *love* that one. I've got a real soft spot for birds, and you truly captured him.

Your handling of the paint is sublime. The still lifes are lovely, and your urban landscapes in particular are very affecting. Very human and certainly way beyond just reporting what's there. I will be studying them to see what I can learn. I would love to see them in person.

I'm a Bay Area native (San Mateo) and lived there for many years. Crockett seems like it would be a very good place for a painter. I so agree with you about the value of plein air painting, and the impact it has on ALL our work. I'm still trying to figure out what I really want to do with the paint, and looking at your work has renewed my determination to find my focus.

Yes, Peggi is such a great person. Honestly, I think the greatest value of her DVDs for me is her unconditional enthusiasm and love of what she does. The exercises are terrific, but it's her constant reminder to have fun and make a good painting above all, that helps me the most. Her work ethic is inspiring.

I'm really looking forward to the Stuart Shils workshop, it'll be wonderful to meet you. Have you taken a workshop with him before? We should have a great group of people here.

Thanks again for your kind note.

Hi Mamie, Thanks for your observations and positive feedback on my work.  When were you at Skowhegan?  I was there in '73 and was the recipient of the scholarship from the Maryland Institute.  It was a great summer that changed my life.  I find your small cake paintings very intimate and sensuous and fun (it's always fun to experience a well painted piece). Your small street scenes are interesting, and curious.  Where are they coming from?

John,  I was at Skowhegan in '70. I received the scholarship from Univ. of Texas at Austin.  It was a special time and I can also say that it changed my life.  I refer to that time a bit more on my website (mamiewaltersart.com).  I was a young and very serious color-field painter at the time and won the scholorship based upon that work.  However, I left Skowhegan with my focus totally on contemporary realism. I have had several years of not painting at all, focused on earning a living.  I have had many, many years of painting on weekends and holidays (incredibly frustrating).  I now paint full time, hooray!  Thanks for the kind words about my work.  The still life are painted in the studio.  The street scenes are from photos taken in San Francisco.  Light and values are always a focus in my work. However, in the street scenes (or those particular scenes), the psychological space between the subjects is a strong factor and more subjective (and projective) than assessing light, values, color, etc.  I plan to continue to explore this both in street scenes and still life.
